1. Scope

This specification covers the manufacture, supply, inspection, testing, packing, and delivery of Mild Steel (M.S.) Plates intended for use in structural fabrication, tanks, pressure vessels (non-code), bridges, industrial equipment, general engineering works, and construction applications.

2. Applicable Standards

M.S. plates shall conform to the latest editions of the following standards, as specified in the contract or purchase order:

• IS 2062 – Hot Rolled Medium and High Tensile Structural Steel

• IS 1730 – Dimensions for Steel Plates, Sheets, Strips and Flats

• ASTM A36 – Carbon Structural Steel (where specified)

• BS EN 10025 – Hot Rolled Products of Structural Steels
  Equivalent international standards may be accepted subject to approval by the Engineer-in-Charge.

3. Material

Plates shall be manufactured from fully killed or semi-killed mild steel produced by basic oxygen furnace (BOF) or electric arc furnace (EAF) process. The steel shall be homogeneous, free from laminations, cracks, scale defects, and surface imperfections detrimental to intended use.

4. Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of steel shall comply with the requirements of the applicable standard. Typical limits shall include controlled percentages of Carbon, Manganese, Sulphur, Phosphorus, and Silicon to ensure good weldability, ductility, and strength.

5. Mechanical Properties

The M.S. plates shall meet the mechanical property requirements as per relevant standards, including:

• Yield Strength

• Tensile Strength

• Percentage Elongation

Test values shall meet or exceed the minimum values specified in the governing standard.

6. Dimensions and Tolerances

• Thickness: 3 mm to 100 mm (or as specified)

• Width: Up to 3000 mm

• Length: Up to 12000 mm

• Dimensional tolerances shall be as per IS 1730 or applicable standard.
  Plates shall be supplied flat with acceptable camber and squareness limits.

7. Surface Finish

Plates shall be supplied in hot-rolled condition with mill scale. Surface shall be reasonably smooth and free from pitting, scabs, laminations, or rust beyond permissible limits. Shot blasted, pickled, oiled, or primed plates may be supplied if specified.

8. Testing and Inspection

The following tests shall be carried out in accordance with the applicable standards:

• Chemical Analysis

• Tensile Test

• Bend Test

• Impact Test (if specified)

• Ultrasonic Testing (if specified)

Inspection may be carried out at the manufacturer’s works by the purchaser or an authorized third-party inspection agency.

9. Marking

Each plate shall be legibly marked with:

• Manufacturer’s name or trademark

• Grade of steel

• Heat number / batch number

• Applicable standard

10. Packing and Transportation

Plates shall be stacked and strapped securely to prevent damage during handling and transportation. Edges shall be protected as required to avoid distortion and injury.

11. Documentation

The supplier shall provide the following documents:

• Mill Test Certificate (MTC)

• Chemical and Mechanical Test Reports

• Certificate of Compliance with applicable standards

12. Acceptance

Plates failing to meet the requirements of this specification or showing defects during inspection shall be liable for rejection and replacement at no additional cost.
